Hooray for HOORAY FOR TODAY!
Finally, an APP full of creative ways
to spend quality time with your kids –
right in your pocket!

HOORAY FOR TODAY! is all about giving you, the busy, tired parent/child care provider, a DAILY, fun-filled, creative activity to do with kids! Now readily available at the push of an app, each daily activity will not only give you a spring-board for spending quality time with your child but will also help you better understand how he or she learns.

HOORAY FOR TODAY! is based on Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences that says people learn in at least seven* different ways:

VERBAL/LINGUISTIC – relates to the written or spoken word.
LOGICAL/MATHEMATICAL – uses inductive and deductive reasoning, numbers, patterns and logic.
VISUAL/SPATIAL – deals with the sense of sight and the ability to design, diagram, and picture images in the mind.
BODY/KINESTHETIC – relates to physical movement, touching, handling objects.
MUSICAL/RHYTHMIC – uses sound and sensitivity to rhythm, melodies.
INTERPERSONAL – relies on person-to-person relationships, communication, interacting with others, sharing and cooperating.
INTRAPERSONAL – deals with self-reflection, feelings, thinking, working alone, and intuition.

Each DAILY activity is presented in a rhyming couplet, offering the child a chance to read, repeat and enjoy the rhyme with you. It does not bog you down with directions – your interpretation is probably a lot more fun! Your job is to listen to your child and set the stage for NO WRONG ANSWERS!

Sometimes the activity can last for just a few minutes – a very important, shared few minutes - or it can act as the seed from which many larger, fun-filled activities grow. How it is used is really up to you and the child.

Here is an example:

ROSES ARE RED;
VIOLETS ARE BLUE.
WHAT COLOR IS ‘HAPPY’?
I’M ASKING YOU!

This will draw a response that you can take as far as you like:

CHILD: Purple!
YOU: Why? How does Purple make you happy?
CHILD: I think of my purple skirt, and I feel happy when I wear it!
YOU: What other things are purple?
CHILD: Bubble gum!
YOU: What else makes you happy?
CHILD: Puppies!
YOU: Let’s do something that makes you happy – right now! (and so on…)

You can ‘save’ those activities that were most well-received to “Favorites,” and you can notice how often one or another of the learning styles were enjoyed, and you can certainly use them to expand upon and enjoy at a later time.
Most importantly, I hope you will take time each day to enjoy your child – and say to yourself HOORAY FOR TODAY!

*Gardner has recognized at least one other intelligence with, perhaps, more on the way!
